e. Yesterday, this column reviewed the 2010 version of “The Karate Kid.” This movie is a remake of a 1984 film in which an unlikely partnership develops between two very different people.
The original “The Karate Kid” centers on Daniel (played by Ralph Macchio), an Italian teenager who moves with his mom from New Jersey to California when she gets a new job. As we might expect, there is soon a girl on his horizon, the friendly and pretty Ali (played by Elisabeth Shue). Quite taken with her, Daniel soon has a nemesis in the form of onitsuka tiger for women Johnny (played by William Zabka), her ex-boyfriend, and a talented karate student. After losing a fight with Johnny, Daniel too wants to master karate. He befriends his apartment building’s handyman, Mr. Miyagi (played by Pat Morita), who comes to his aid when Johnny and his friends attack him. Daniel persuades Mr. Miyagi to teach him, but becomes impatient when the old master insists that Daniel ground his technique in the spiritual foundations of karate.
“The Karate Kid” is directed by John G. Avildsen, best known for directing “Rocky.” Like that film, this movie is a good underdog story. We feel sorry for Daniel at the beginning at root for him throughout.
Ralph Macchio is very impressive. He makes Daniel into a likeable character. Elisabeth Shue is also strong as Ali, his girlfriend. Pat Morita is excellent a Mr. Miyagi, a wise martial arts master. His work earned an Academy Award nomination.
“The Karate Kid” is well-worth seeing as it has a great story and great performances.
